The Evolving Locum Provider Profile

Share:

Healthcare facilities are increasingly relying on locum professionals to fill critical gaps in coverage. And understanding the profile of today’s locum physician has become more important than ever.

This is one of the current events we examined in our 2025 Trends in Locum Tenens Report. Read on for a breakdown of what we discovered.

Experience Speaks Volumes

A notable characteristic of today’s locum workforce is their substantial experience.

Our recent findings reveal that nearly 60% of locum tenens professionals fall between ages 51 and 70, bringing more than 20 years of clinical expertise to their assignments.

This demographic shift challenges the idea of locum work as primarily a stepping stone for early-career physicians. This experienced cohort brings invaluable knowledge to healthcare facilities, often serving as clinical mentors and providing stability during transitions.

An extensive background allows them to quickly adapt to new environments and contribute meaningfully from day one, making them particularly valuable to facilities facing urgent staffing needs.

The Mid-Career Pivot

A common assumption is that locum providers are typically at the beginning or towards the end of their careers.Contrary to that, nearly half of providers surveyed actually began working locums mid-career.

This trend reflects a shift in how physicians view their professional trajectories.

The motivations driving this mid-career transition are telling. Practice diversification emerges as a key factor, with 41% of physicians citing the desire to broaden their clinical experience as a primary reason for choosing locum work.

This speaks to a growing appetite among established physicians to challenge themselves with new clinical environments, different patient populations, and varied healthcare systems.

The Quest for Balance

Perhaps more compelling is the 75% of locum physicians who report seeking better work-life balance as their primary motivation.

This statistic underscores a broader transformation in medical practice, where physicians are increasingly prioritizing personal well-being alongside professional fulfillment.

Locum work offers the flexibility to control scheduling, take extended time off between assignments, and maintain autonomy over career decisions—luxuries often unavailable in traditional permanent positions.

This emphasis on work-life balance represents a generational shift in medicine, where physicians are rejecting the notion that professional success requires personal sacrifice. Instead, they’re crafting careers that allow for travel, family time, pursuing hobbies, and maintaining mental health while practicing medicine at a high level.

Assignment Patterns and Preferences

Our data also reveals interesting patterns in how locum physicians structure their work.

With 58% of assignments lasting five months or less, it’s clear that many locum professionals actually prefer shorter-term commitments.

Of course, this preference aligns with the desire for flexibility and variety that draws many physicians to locum work in the first place.Shorter assignment durations allow physicians to experience different healthcare systems, geographic regions, and clinical challenges without making long-term commitments.

For facilities, this pattern means they can access specialized expertise for specific needs while maintaining the flexibility to adjust staffing as circumstances change.

What Does This Mean for Healthcare Facilities?

The maturity and experience of today’s locum workforce means facilities can expect high-quality care and clinical leadership.

However, it also suggests that healthcare systems must adapt their approach to attracting and retaining locum professionals. Locum providers of today are often established professionals seeking flexibility rather than burgeoning physicians looking for any opportunity.

This means facilities should emphasize the unique benefits their locations offer. These could be things such as:

  • Interesting or unique cases
  • Advanced technology
  • Lifestyle amenities
  • Professional development opportunities.

Final Thoughts

The profile of today’s locum physician suggests this workforce will continue to play a crucial role in healthcare delivery – and be beneficial to your long-term staffing.

As the healthcare industry continues to grapple with physician shortages and changing work preferences, the locum tenens model is increasingly well-positioned to meet these challenges.
